Muslim friendly at Bangkok International

I've been a visitor to Bangkok International Airport, or better known to most as Suvarnabhumi International Airport, several times and most recently during Ramadhan of this year. What I find fascinating about the airport is it's so Muslim friendly!

It's not a Muslim country, although they have a sizeable Muslim population, but they have a prayer room for Muslims which is bigger than most Muslim country airport. Even KLIA in Malaysia, a country that declares itself as a Muslim country, doesn't even have a prayer room, surau, as big as this... shame on the people who built that airport. Frankly speaking none of the Muslim countries I've visited, the list is not that long, had a good prayer room... period.

Its located on the West side of the airport near all the transfer counters. The airport has a West and a East wing, the West wing is for International and East is for Domestic. You can't miss it and its really easy to spot, just twirl yourself around a few times at the 4 way junction and you'll be able to spot it.

Once your in the male prayer section is at the front and the ablution section is at the front. The place is quite big that a man sleeping looks like a fly on the carpet. Whenever in doubt of the prayer times and direction, there's always a Kiblah direction and clocks showing the correct time. Females pray at the back behind the wooden patrician, with their own ablution area.

Now if your hungry, outside of room there's a sign showing where to find Halal food at the airport, which is at F1-F6. Which so conveniently is just one floor up. Again once your up there, just twirl yourself around and you'll find the cluster of restaurants selling Halal grubs.

I think its just sad that most Muslim countries don't even offer a decent enough prayer room at their international airport. Maybe we simply take it for granted as we are used to small cramp prayer rooms. But for a Muslim visitor seeing this, he might not like what he sees. It might sound counter intuitive but they, I mean people who build and administer airport in Muslim countries, should really learn from non-Muslim countries like Thailand on how to build one. Maybe their secret is to build one as good as possible so that your Muslim minority citizens don't go do a Arab Spring in their own country.
